Den er formet som en liten sk\u00e5l, og mange velger \u00e5 servere kakene fylt med krem og friske b\u00e6r. Den eldste oppskriften p\u00e5 sandkaker stammer helt tilbake til tidlig 1900-tall, i en kokebok skrevet av kokebokforfatter og kvinnesaksforkjemper Olaug L\u00f8ken.
